MAKIVIs: Honoring Three Albanian Heroes Who Shaped Our Collective Memory

As part of the Youth INC project, Act for Society Center proudly presents three MAKIVIs (Virtual Monuments of Common Heroes) that commemorate individuals whose courage, dedication, and human values continue to inspire young generations across Albania and beyond.

These stories highlight three figures who embody civic responsibility, education, and resilience — values at the heart of the Youth INC initiative.

1. Mejdin Malhani – The Guardian of Human Dignity

Mejdin Malhani devoted his life to humanitarian service, embodying the true meaning of civic responsibility. Known for his selfless work in community development and social inclusion, he stood beside those most in need, ensuring that every individual was treated with respect and compassion. His legacy continues to inspire young Albanians to take initiative and act for a more inclusive and fair society.

Mejdin’s story reminds us that heroism is not only found in grand gestures, but in the daily commitment to do good — to serve, to protect, and to uplift others.

2. Elida Qenami – The Voice of Change and Education

Elida Qenami dedicated her career to empowering youth and strengthening the role of education in building resilient communities. Through her work in civil society, she promoted equal opportunities, women’s rights, and the importance of dialogue and active citizenship.

Her leadership and vision continue to resonate through the generations of young people she mentored. Elida’s story stands as a testament that education and empathy are the foundation for lasting social change.

3. Sevasti Qiriazi (Dako) – The Pioneer of Women’s Education

Born in 1871, Sevasti Qiriazi became the first Albanian woman to graduate from a modern university and the founder of the first Albanian school for girls in Korçë. Her dedication to education and gender equality transformed the landscape of Albanian society at a time when girls’ schooling was considered impossible.

Despite political persecution and exile, Sevasti never abandoned her mission: to make education accessible to all. Today, her story continues to symbolize courage, perseverance, and the transformative power of knowledge. The school she founded stands as a museum and a living testament to her lifelong dream of a more educated and equal Albania.
